New Era Workforce · Baltimore

Baltimore is building its future. Our young people should build it.

We prepare young Baltimoreans who aren't heading to college for the industries the city has said it's growing, one proven workshop at a time.

The missing middle

The city named six sectors. Nobody is walking young people into them.

The Baltimore Development Corporation has published the innovation sectors it is growing. Universities supply the degreed talent. But a young person who isn't one of the region's 140,000 college students has no route in.

N.E.W. is that route. We use the city's own priorities as our syllabus.

How it works · the WFD Cycle

Do one thing, and do it well, before we scale.

We treat every workshop like a product. It runs for one quarter, gets tested with two cohorts, gets measured, and earns its next version. Or it doesn't, and we've risked one quarter instead of a year.

01

One skill employers want

Each workshop proves a single skill that makes a client worth hiring. Hiring partners confirm it before we teach it.

02

Real briefs, real work

Clients work to a brief from a real organization. Every client leaves with a finished piece for their portfolio and resume.

03

Reverse education

Cohort 1 comes back to mentor Cohort 2. Teaching deepens their mastery, and the workshop grows without adding staff.

Digital Content Creation

In partnership with South Baltimore Gateway Partnership

Every business and nonprofit in South Baltimore needs content, and most can't make enough of it. In this workshop, clients take a brief from a real local organization and deliver finished work by its deadline. They make what was asked for, not a class project.

The one skill

Take a real organization's brief and deliver a finished, publish-ready short video or post set on deadline.

KnowledgeShooting, editing, captioning, and exporting for a platform's specs
AdaptabilityRevising the piece after feedback from the organization
AttitudeHitting the deadline and presenting the work

Two teams. Never built a game. Shipped playable VR in four days.

Day 1"I fear that I won't learn how to code"
Day 2"Learned how to code"

Their own backlog, their own Kanban board, their own retrospectives, and a build running on a headset at the end. It was documented well enough that a funder could audit it and another instructor could run it again. That's the method N.E.W. is built on.

Accessible by design

Built on National Science Foundation research.

Our team works on Space For All, a National Science Foundation project run at the Tech Lab with Dr. Foad Hamidi at UMBC. It studies how to make maker spaces accessible and inclusive for neurodiverse and differently abled learners.

Every N.E.W. workshop is designed with what that research found, so a workforce pathway works for more young people.

Universal Design for LearningWorkshops built on UDL principles from the start, not adapted later.
Co-designedShaped with therapists, caregivers, coaches, and K–12 teachers, and tested in co-design workshops with young people.
Peer-reviewedWorkshop design guides, space design guides, and published research, all from the NSF Advancing Informal STEM Learning program.

What we measure

Skill first. Placement when we've earned it.

We only claim what we've measured. Every workshop proves the skill landed before anyone talks about jobs.

Leading indicators

Measured every quarter, from the start

  • Skill match, judged by hiring partners
  • Rubric scores on finished work, V1 against V2
  • Workshop usability, rated by clients
  • Completion and attendance

Lagging indicators

On the roadmap, added one at a time

  • Paid internships with hiring partners
  • Industry certifications
  • Job placement
  • Clients who enter, perform, and contribute
